CSA Veg Box

I love the CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) movement in LA.   Californians are a little late to the game, as I know places in other parts of the world have been doing this for some time, but they are springing up all over the place now.  Local farms contribute different things, so that the boxes are quite varied, and the produce is entirely seasonal.  Our friends Craig and Kenny let us pick up (and eat) their box while they were out of town this weekend.  It was full of peaches, carrots, tomatoes, corn, chilis, potatoes, cabbage, a watermelon, a head of lettuce, and more- and that was just the “small” box!  Crazy.  I am now looking for inventive recipes to use so that I don’t waste any of these farm-fresh goodies.  For you LA locals, this is the co-op that my friends use.  I couldn’t resist taking a photo.

The passionflower I found on a walk,  and the echeveria is blooming in my garden along with several other succulents.

Triumph!

This is my first successful attempt to use a rooting compound.  It’s a species of Pelargonium that I broke off from someone’s yard (think of it less as stealing and more as unwittingly sharing).  It will eventually look like this, a lovely pairing of crimson and grey.  A much less showy Pelargonium than your usual garden-variety scented ones.  I think it will be nice with all my cacti and succulents, as well as my catmint.

I will certainly be using this much more often for further rooting.  It’s a lot of fun.  Super dorky fun.

Vintage find: Sears Com/Trek IV

Found this sexy thang at a thrift store yesterday.  I’m in love.  It works like a dream, it’s portable, there’s a place to stick earphones in (which kind of cracks me up), and you could stick batteries in it and take it to the park. Oh yeah, and it’s covered in faux woodgrain and metal.

Kinder Happy Hippo Biscuit

Yes, I know he’s really too cute to eat.  But so delicious!  If you are a European ex-pat in Los Angeles, and miss your Kinder candies, you really must pay a visit to Mel & Rose on Melrose Ave. past Crescent Heights near Melrose Place.  They are stocked with great wines, sodas, rare candies, and other snacks.  I became obsessed with adorable Kinder cookies and candies when I worked so close to this shop- they make great deli sandwiches too and I used to go here for lunch quite often.

Huntington Gardens plant sale

There was such an overwhelming variety at the sale… I ended up with three little guys-  A Huernia and two Crassulas.

Bungalow Sofa

So this is the sofa we bought from Urban Outfitters about a year ago-it’s a little squeaky, and not the most comfortable for extended sitting, but it’s been fine.  It looked better than the designs at Ikea, and was a comparable price.

However,  I just saw this one while hunting around on the U.O. site, which is almost an exact knock off of the vintage Danish Modern style ones that we really love- and it matches the style of the Danish Modern chair my husband picked up at a swapmeet for $20.  C’est la vie.  Someday maybe we’ll find an authentic one at another swapmeet for a song… haha probably not here in LA though!
