Philip Kwame Apagya

Design Boom posted a great article about Ghanian photographer Philip Kwame Apagya, which I found riveting. He is known for his photos of African people posing before painted backdrops of environments or objects that are typically “objects of desire”. Below are some of his photos.

“Philip Kwame Apagya’s formal portraits in front of commissioned painted backgrounds seem to be suspended between realism and a sort of na?vitĂ©, they are both unreal and hyperealistic: the dreams of African people are put on stage –
against scenery which praises consumer society.” – Design Boom
