Jim Henson: Time Piece

This old experimental movie by a very young, lanky Jim Henson is amazing. He made it and stars in it. It is so beautiful; you really must watch it. I’m very sad I missed a screening in West Hollywood of a bunch of his old experimental movies which coincided with our anniversary this past Tuesday. Here are some screengrabs from Time Piece to compel you to watch it…

Ghanan movie posters

Our friend Noah turned us on to this site which sells vintage posters that were hand-painted by Ghanans after the introduction of video and video cassettes to Ghana in the 1980’s.  In order to lure more customers to the mobile movie houses, people would paint these posters after having watched the films, using oil paint.  As it mentions on the site, the artist had the freedom to make the images more attractive by adding things to the posters that were not necessarily in the films!

Jose Gonzalez

I like this cover of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” by Jose Gonzalez, and this video that goes with it.

Justin Fines: Animation for Yo Gabba Gabba

I really liked this animation by Justin Fines for Yo Gabba Gabba. The song has a very sweet message too, by Dean and Britta from Luna. In case you aren’t familar with YGG, it’s a show that’s geared towards the children of parents who are 20 to 30-something and nostalgic for vintage Sesame Street (ie: when it was cool and sort of psychedelic). Our friend Scott Windes works on the show, and Seth has even contributed too so we’re a bit partial, but we really like what they’re doing over there. It’s a show that you can appreciate creatively, even if you don’t have kids.

Music Animation Machine

Music Animation Machine is midi-rendered classical songs which have been animated… ’nuff said. Stephen Malinowski’s site is nothing glamourous, but the designs produced by his program are beautiful. The shot below is from his Claire de Lune animation.

Optical illusions

Here is a sleekly animated little video about optical illusions, directed by Mauro Vecchi.
